Primary/Volatile And Secondary/Non Volatile Memory | CHAPTER 7 | Computer and Information Technology

Primary/Volatile And Secondary/Non Volatile Memory – This book covers the entire syllabus of “Computer & Information Technology” prescribed by the BNMC for B.Sc. in Nursing Science & Diploma in Nursing Science & Midwifery students. We tried to accommodate the latest information and topics.

This book is an examination setup according to the teachers’ lectures and examination questions. We hope in touch with the book students’ knowledge will be upgraded and flourished. The unique way of presentation may make your reading of the book a pleasurable experience.

Volatile and Non volatile memory

1. Primary Memory / Volatile Memory: Primary Memory also called as volatile memory because the meinory can’t store the data permanently. Primary memory select any part of memory when user want to save the data in memory but that may not be store permanently on that location. It also has another name i.e. RAM.
Examples of Primary storage:

  • RAM,
  • L2 Cache.

2. Secondary Memory / Non Volatile Memory: Secondary memory is external and permanent memory that is useful to store the external storage media such as floppy disk, magnetic disks, magnetic tapes and etc cache devices. Secondary memory deals with following types of components.

  • Hard drive,
  • CD-ROM.

Difference between Primary/Volatile Memory & Secondary/Non Volatile Memory:

Primary/Volatile MemorySecondary/Non Volatile Memory
1. Primary memory/storages are temporary;Whereas the secondary storage is permanent.
2. Primary memory is expensive and smallerWhereas secondary memory is cheaper and larger
3. Primary memory storages are faster,Whereas secondary storages are slower.
4. Primary memory storages are connected through data buses to CPU,Whereas the secondary storages are connect through data cables to CPU
5. It is a primary storageIt is a secondary storage
6. Has smaller storage capacity as compared to Non-volatile memoryHas a larger storage capacity
7. Has a huge impact on the system’s performanceHas a huge impact on a system’s storage capacity
8. More expensive per unit sizeLess expensive per unit size
9. Examples of Primary storage:

  • RAM
  • L2 Cache.
Example of Secondary Storage;

  • Hard drive,
  • CD-ROM.
