Concept about Multimedia

Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio, images, animations, video and interactive content. Multimedia contrasts with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.

Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, interacted with or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia devices are electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is distinguished from mixed mediain fine art; for example, by including audio it has a broader scope. The term “rich media” is synonymous with interactive multimedia.

 

 

Definition of Multimedia

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally.

Uses of Multimedia:

1. Advertising
  • In the field of advertising the multimedia plays a great and a vital role.
  • As whatever it is whether print or electronic advertisement, they first are prepared on the computer tables by using professionals’ software’s and then it is brought in front of the ultimate audiences.
2. Education Sector
  • In the area of education also, the multimedia has a great importance.
  • Talking particularly about the schools, the education of multimedia is very important for children also.
  • Students from starting only are getting in touch with computers so that they can be friendlier with them in their later stages.
3. Engineering
  • Software engineers may use multimedia in computer simulations for anything from entertainment to training such as military or industrial training.
4. Mathematical and scientific research
  • In mathematical and scientific research, multimedia is mainly used for modeling and simulation.
5. Medicine
  • In medicine, doctors can get trained by looking at a virtual surgery or they can simulate how the human body is affected by diseases spread by viruses and bacteria and then develop techniques to prevent it
6. Commercial uses
  • Much of the electronic old and new media used by commercial artists and graphic designers is multimedia
  • Exciting presentations are used to grab and keep attention in advertising.
7. Mass Media
  • Multimedia is very in the field of mass media i.e. journalism, there are many magazines and newspaper that are published periodically.
  • The use of multimedia is also very much as in a publishing house there are many works of newspaper designing and other stuff also.

A. Text: Text is the basis for word processing programs and is still the fundamental information used in many multimedia programs.

B. Audio Sound: The integration of audio sound into a multimedia application can provide the user with information not possible through any other method of communication

C. Static Graphics images: There is no movement in these types of picture. Static graphics images are an important part of multimedia because humans are visually oriented. As the old Chinese proverb goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words. “Windows is also a visual environment.

D. Animation: Animation refers to moving graphics images. The movement of somebody giving CPR makes it much easier to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rather than just viewing a static picture.

E. Full-Motion Video: Full-motion video, such as the images portrayed in a television, can add even more to a multimedia application.

A multimedia computer system is a computer having capability to integrate two or more types of media (text, graphics, image, audio, and video) for generation, storage, representation, manipulation, and access of multimedia information.

The main mediums of Multimedia

There is a well-wide preferences for computers and they tend to replace the conventional machines.

1. Text: Any work is relation to written text is world-wide done on computers. Once it was done by the typewriter. At present, computers are used for all kinds of writing tasks in offices to professional printing houses.

2. Graphics: Computers are used for graphics design, editing, and so on. In our country, the use of computer is very limited in graphics design, painting, drawing, and even in commercial graphics included in Fine Arts. However, computers are widely used in printers and packaging industries. The use of computer started in 1990s in printing, publication and graphics design. It was first used in editing scanned photos by Photoshop. Gradually, computers have been used in design and graphics.

  • Video: Video is a kind of graphics. It is better to call it a moving graphics. Video is an established medium all over the world. Video has been extensively used in TV, Home Video, Multimedia Software, Web, etc.
  • Animation: Animation is a kind of graphics. But it can be either moving or static. It can be either 2D or 3D. The use of animation is gradually increasing in our country. In advertisement, animation is a favourite media, but we lack skilled people in this sector. In fact, animation is never used as a single medium. It is combined with audio, video, text, graphics, etc.

3. Sound or Audio: The whole world depends on computer for sound or audio recordings, editing, etc. Analogue system has completely been obsolete in sound engineering. Now sound recording can easily be done in computers.

Use of Multimedia in ICT

There is an increased use of multimedia in ICT.

➤ As teaching aid: The use of multimedia as a teaching aid is widely used. The learners will understand a topic easily if multimedia is used in the class room. The teacher can easily make the lesson effective and interactive. Besides this, there is multimedia software for education.

  • Multimedia Software: The multi-media software has just started being made in Bangladesh. Multimedia technology has been used in with ‘Bangladesh-71’, ‘Abosor’, ‘Biswakosh’, ‘Namajshiksha’, ‘Bijoy Shishushiksha’, etc. They are not much interactive. However, we expect that in Bangladesh, multimedia software will be definitely developed extensively in the 21st Century.
  • Digital Publication: Our publication is still paper-based, but 21st century will definitely be the century of digital publication.

➤ Entertainment: Multimedia is widely used in most of the genres of entertainment. Cinemas and plays are being made livelier by the special effects of multimedia.

➤ Advertisement: Because of the use of multimedia, advertisements have become attractive. Both real and fictional elements can be shown in advertisements with the help multimedia.

➤ Games: Multimedia is extensively used in computer games or video games. Because of the use of multimedia, the games seem as real as real life.
