Abdominal Pain In Pregnancy – This course is designed to understand the care of pregnant women and newborn: antenatal, intra-natal and postnatal; breast feeding, family planning, newborn care and ethical issues, The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and develop competencies regarding midwifery, complicated labour and newborn care including family planning.

Abdominal Pain In Pregnancy

Causes of abdominal pain in pregnancy:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Preterm labor
  • Placental abruption
  • Preeclampsia
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
  • Appendicitis
  • Gallstones

Conditions not directly related to pregnancy may also cause abdominal pain. These
include:

  • kidney stones
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • gallstones
  • pancreatitis
  • appendicitis
  • bowel obstruction
  • food allergies or sensitivities
  • peptic ulcer disease
  • a stomach virus
  • Gas and Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Sexual intercourse

Manage abdominal pain in pregnancy:

♦ Move around or do some gentle exercises to relieve gas pain..
♦ Take a warm (not hot) bath or shower.
♦ Bend toward a pain for relief.
♦ Drink plenty of fluids. (Dehydration can cause Braxton Hicks contractions.)
♦ Try lying down. This might relieve pain caused by Braxton Hicks contractions.

Acute abdominal conditions/pain in pregnancy:

A. Non-obstetrical:

a) Surgical:

  • Acute appendicitis
  • Perforation of PUD
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Acute cholecystitis
  • Renal or ureteric colic
  • Any malignant condition

b) Medical:

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • UTI
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Cystitis

c) Gynaecological:

  • Retention of urine
  • Torsion of the fibroid
  • Red degeneration of fibroid

B. Obstetrical:

a) Early:

  • Abortion
  • Acute polyhydramnios

b) Late:

  • Pre-term labour
  • Labor pain
  • Ruptured uterus
  • Acute fulminating pre-eclampsia
  • Abruption placenta
