Adolescent / teen suicide
Suicide is when someone dies on purpose. A young person dying because of overwhelming hopelessness or frustration is devastating to family, friends, and community. Parents, siblings, classmates, coaches, and neighbors might be left wondering if they could have done something to prevent that young person from turning to suicide.
Risk factors for teen adolescent suicide:
A teen might feel suicidal due to certain life circumstances such as:
✓ talk about suicide or death in general
✓ give hints that they might not be around anymore
✓ talk about feeling hopeless or feeling guilty
✓ pull away from friends or family
✓ write songs, poems, or letters about death, separation, and loss
✓ start giving away treasured possessions to siblings or friends
✓ lose the desire to take part in favorite things or activities
✓ have trouble concentrating or thinking clearly
✓ have changes in eating or sleeping habits
✓ engage in risk-taking behaviors
✓ lose interest in school or sports

Warning signs of suicide:
Warning signs of teen suicide might include:
✓ Talking or writing about suicide-for example, making statements such as “I’m going to kill myself,” or “I won’t be a problem for you much longer”
✓ Withdrawing from social contact
✓ Having mood swings
✓ Increasing use of alcohol or drugs
✓ Feeling trapped or hopeless about a situation
✓ Changing normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns
✓ Doing risky or self-destructive things
✓ Giving away belongings when there is no other logical explanation for why this is being done
✓ Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated when experiencing some of the warning signs listed above
Prevention of teen/adolescent suicide:
1. Address depression or anxiety.
2. Pay attention.
3. Discourage isolation.
4. Encourage a healthy lifestyle.
5. Support the treatment plan.
6. Safely store firearms, alcohol and medications.
