Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Actions
Mechanism of action of NSAIDs NSAIDs work by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and/or COX- 2). In cells, these enzymes are involved in the synthesis of key biological mediators, namely prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation, and thromboxanes, which are involved in blood clotting.

- Gastric ulceration
- Dyspepsia
- Nausea
- Vomiting

B. Hypersensitivity

B. Liver: Liver damage
C. Kidney: Analgesic nephropathy
1. Chronic interstitial nephritis
2. Renal tubular necrosis
3. Acute renal failure
D. Blood: Impaired clotting.
Management of a Patient with Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Overdose:
➤ Resuscitation
- Standard procedures and supportive care.
- Ensure adequate hydration after large overdoses to reduce the likelihood of acute renal failure.
➤ Decontamination
- Activated charcoal is not indicated.
- Ongoing care and monitoring
✔ Discuss with toxicologist, particularly in symptomatic children and those with abnormal pathology results
✔ Use a proton pump inhibitor for epigastric pain.
✔ Treat seizures as per a febrile seizure
