Community participation
Community participation is the process by which individuals and families assume responsibility for their own health and welfare and for those of the community and develop the capacity to contribute to their and to the community’s development. An example of community participation in Bangladesh is the EPI programme.
Ways of Community Participation
There are three ways in which a community can participate in PHC as follows:
1. The community can provide in the shape of facilities, manpower, logistic support, and possibly funds.
2. The community can be actively involved in planning, management, and evaluation.
3. An equally important contribution that people can make is by joining in and using the health services.
Key characteristics and skills important to facilitating community participation include
- Commitment to community-derived solutions to community-based problems
- Political, cultural, and gender sensitivity
- Ability to apply learning and behavior change principles and theories
- Ability to assess, support, and build capacities in the community
- Confidence in the community’s expertise
- Technical knowledge of the health or other issue(s) the project will address
- Ability to communicate well, especially by actively listening v
- Ability to facilitate group meetings
- Programmatic and managerial strengths
- Organizational development expertise
- Ability to advocate for and defend community-based solutions and approaches.

Roles (Importance) of Community Participation in Primary Health Care (PHC)
1. The community get chance to involve in planning, implementing and evaluating-health care programmes.
2. It promotes social awareness, sense of responsibility for the programmes.
3. It guarantees that a felt need is involved. 4. It makes self-reliance of the community.
5. It increases the community acceptance of primary health care programmes and reduces the distance between the providers and the consumers of health care.
6. It helps to mobilize and utilize local resources. And services can be provided at a lower rate.
7. It will act as a catalyst for further development effort.
