Concept about Solutions | CHAPTER 11 | Basic Science

Concept about Solutions – Introduction to fundamental concepts of Biological Science including the organization and common characteristics of living matters, cell structures and functions, food production by photosynthesis, harvesting energy, mechanism of cells reproduction, genetics, evolutions, and Human Biology. Introduction to general chemistry including basic concepts about matter, atomic structure, chemical bonds, gases, liquid, and solids, solutions, chemical reactions, acid, bases, and salt;

organic and biochemistry including hydrocarbons and their derivatives, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, nucleic acids; principles of physics and applications to nursing including gravity and mechanics, pressure, heat and electricity; nuclear chemistry and nuclear physics, effects of radiation on human beings, and protection and disposal. The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and skills in general biological science, general chemistry and physics.

Concept about Solutions

Solutions are an important part of drug administration. Practically all chemical reactions take place in solution. Therefore, the knowledge about solutions is essential to nurses and other health personnel’s. Mixtures can be divided into two general categories: homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixtures are called solutions. Here”, “homogeneous’ means that visually the material appears uniform throughout.

Heterogeneous mixtures are any that are not homogeneous, e.g., beverages are homogeneous mixtures, but orange juice with pulp is heterogeneous. There are two kinds of relatively stable homogeneous mixtures: solutions and colloidal dispersions. A third kind, the suspension, is unstable, being homogeneous only when constantly stirred.3

Although we usually think of solutions as being liquids, there are solid solutions and gaseous solutions. Alloys (such as 18- Karat gold, a mixture of gold and copper) are examples of solid solutions. Air.is an example of a gaseous solution. Vinegar and sugar in water are liquid solutions. When a solid is mixed with a liquid to produce a solution, the solid is the solute and the liquid, the solvent. Similarly, the gas is the solute and the liquid is the solvent in a solution prepared from mixing a gas with a liquid.

When a solution is prepared from two liquids, the liquid present in the larger amount is called the solvent and the one iii lesser quantity, the solute.

Solution Examples

Solution typeExample
Gas-gasAir
Gas-liquidCarbon dioxide in soda
Gas-solidHydrogen gas in palladium metal
Liquid-liquidGasoline
Solid-liquidSugar in water
Liquid-solidMercury dental amalgam

Definition of Solutions:

In chemistry, a solution is a special type of homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. The term aqueous solution is when one of the solvents is water.

or

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution may exist in any phase.

or

A true solution is defined as a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in which the dispersed particles are ions or molecules.
