Family is defined as, “Social unit of two or more persons related by blood, marriage, or adoption and having a shared commitment to the mutual relationship”.

Or

A general definition of a family is “two or more persons who are joined together by bonds of sharing and emotional closeness & who identify themselves as being part of the family”.

Types of family

1. Nuclear family: The nuclear family is defined as a husband, wife, and their children.

2. Extended family: The extended family consists of those members of the nuclear family and other blood- related persons such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

3. Blended (or step) family: A blended or stepfamily occurs when divorced, widowed, or never-married single parent forms a household with a new partner both partners or only one may have children.

4. Single parent family: While there has been a variety of shifts m family structures, none has been more dramatic than the shift towards families headed by single parent. Single parenting occurs by means of divorce, separation, death of a spouse, or choice.

A single parent family can be created when a single person acquires a child through birth or adoption, however, most single parent households have been created by divorce and 90% of them are comprised of single mothers and their children.

5. Wider family: A family that emerges from life style, is Voluntary, and is independent of necessary biological or kin connections.

6. Traditional family: The family structures that are most familiars and that are most readily accepted by society.

Functions of family

1. Residence: to provide a clean and decent home to its members.

2. Division of labour

3. Reproduction and bringing up of children.

4. Socialization: the family is a bridge between generations and between father and sons.

5. Economic functions.

6. Social care: The family provides social care by-

  • Giving status in a society to its members.
  • Protecting its members from insult.
  • Regulating marital activities of its members.
  • Regulating to a certain extent political, religious and general social activities.
  • Regulating sex relations.
