Dictionary meaning of the word sanitation: ‘the science of safeguarding health. The national sanitation foundation of the USA has been defined sanitation as, a way of life, the quality of living that is expressed in the clean home, the clean farm, the clean business, the clean neighborhood and the clean community. Being a way of life, it must come from within the people, it is nourished by knowledge and grows as an obligation and an ideal in human relations.’
Environmental sanitation
The term ‘environmental sanitation’ has been defined by WHO as “The control of all those factors in man’s physical environment which exercise or may exercise a deleterious effect on his physical development, health and survival.”
Importance of environmental sanitation
1. Much of the ill-health in Bangladesh is due to poor environmental sanitation, i.e., unsafe water, polluted soil, unhygienic disposal of human excreta and refuse, poor housing, insects and rodents.
2. High infant mortality rate, sickness rate and poor standards of health are largely due to poor environmental sanitation. Improvement of environmental sanitation is therefore crucial for the prevention of disease and promotion of health of individuals and communities.

8. Helps control the quality of certain products, edible items, meat, vegetables and drinking water quality.
9. Many poisons and toxic materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic and asbestos etc are very dangerous and harmful to health. Environmental sanitation can help control these problems and have a good check and balance over their release and dispose.
10. Environmental sanitation is the practice which promotes the desire for living a health life and a life full of color, purpose, goals, enthusiasm and zeal.
