Functions of leadership
Function of a Leader:
Krech and Crutchfield gives a list of 14 functions performed by leaders in general. The following functions are given below:
Leader’s function | Actions |
Executive | Coordinating group activities and overseeing the setting of policies and goals. |
Planner | Deciding how the group will achieve its goals. |
Policy maker | Establishing policies and goals. |
Expert | A source of expert information. |
External group representative | Speaking for the group with others. |
Controller of internal relationships | Determining the social structure of the group. |
Purveyor of rewards and punishment | Controlling members by punishing and rewarding. |
Arbitrator and mediator | Resolving disputes in the group. |
Exemplar | Behaving in a way that others should behave.. |
Symbol of the group | Acting as symbolic embodiment of the group, its goals and its values. |
Substitute for individual responsibility | Relieving individuals of the need and responsibility of personal decisions. |
Ideologist | Being the source of beliefs and values. |
Father figure | Focus for positive emotional feelings of individuals and the object for identification and transference. |
Scapegoat | Acting as a target for aggression and hostility. Taking the blame on behalf of the group |

Characteristics of Leadership/Leader:
- A leader exerts personal influence on other employee.
- He lays down group objectives and policies for followers, motivating them and coordinating their efforts to accomplish the objectives.
- He presumes the existence of a group of followers.
- His style may differ from case to case.
- He has the ability to pursue and motivate employees to work in order to accomplish specified objectives.
- The leader in an organization is viewed differently by different employees. Some may feel that the leader is bossy and some others may feel that he is not.
- The nature of a leader is to induce and develop responsibility and initiative among his subordinates. He has to motivate the employees.
- Decision making is an important trait of a leader. His nature should prompt him to take good decisions and implement them effectively.
- Leaders and bestowed with authority and such authority should be cautiously exercised for the benefit of the organization.
- In every organization, a group of workers will be strong and even in that group few persons will be more dominating. The nature of the leader in such situations should be that he is capable of handling this strong group for the betterment of the organization.
