Modal Verb কী বা কোনগুলো?
Modal verb হচ্ছে এক প্রকার “auxiliary verb,” যাদেরকে “helping verb বা সাহায্যকারী ক্রিয়া” হিসেবেও সম্বোধন করা হয়। এর মানে হচ্ছে modal verb অন্যান্য verb এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে বাক্যটিকে একটি নতুন অর্থ প্রদান করে।
উদাহরণস্বরূপ, এগুলো আপনার বাক্যের tense পরিবর্তন করে ফেলতে পারে, অথবা কোনো ঘটনা সম্পন্ন হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা, অনুমতি কিংবা প্রয়োজনীয়তা নির্দেশ করতে পারে।

Can
➤ এই modal verb এর সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত ব্যবহার হচ্ছে সামর্থ্য প্রকাশ করা। এক্ষেত্রে, can শব্দটি “be able to” জাতীয় অর্থ প্রকাশ করে
- I can play piano.
➤ প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করার ক্ষেত্রেও আপনি এই শব্দটি ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন। একটি কাজ করার জন্য কারো সামর্থ্য আছে কিনা জিজ্ঞাসা করতে আপনি হয়তো তাকে বলবেন: Can you______ ?
- Can you speak English?
➤ একইভাবে, can দিয়ে কখনো কখনো সাহায্য প্রস্তাব করা অথবা অনুমতি চাওয়া হয়।
- I can watch your dog while you’re on vacation.
- Can you please pass the butter?
➤ আপনি প্রায়ই দেখবেন যে এই modal verb ব্যবহার করে কোনো কিছু ঘটার সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করা হয়।
- Houses can flood in this region during rainstorms.
Could
➤ A Could দিয়ে মূলত can এর অতীত কাল (past tense) প্রকাশ করা হয়। অতীত সময়ের জন্য সামর্থ্য প্রকাশ করতে আপনি could বেছে নিতে পারেন।
- I could understand German when I was a kid.
- Could you hear the birds chirping yesterday morning?
➤ Can এর মতো Could দিয়েও সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করা হয়। কিন্তু, can এর সাথে এর পার্থক্য হলো এই যে could দিয়ে তুলনামূলক কম দৃঢ় সম্ভাবনার কথা তুলে ধরা হয়।
- We could go to the park or we could go to the mall.
Will
➤ ইংরেজি বাক্যকে ভবিষ্যৎ কালে রূপ দিতে will সবচেয়ে বেশী ব্যবহৃত হয়। ভবিষ্যতে কোনো ঘটনা ঘটতে যাচ্ছে এমন কিছু বোঝাতে এটি বেছে নেয়া হয়।
- I will wash my plates after I finish eating
- They will visit their grandmom next month
➤ প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যে, will দিয়ে ভবিষ্যতে কোনো কিছু ঘটতে যাচ্ছে কিনা তা জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়।
- Will there be a storm tomorrow?
- Will we have a quiz in English class?
Would
➤ Would দিয়ে সাধারণত অতীতের অভ্যাসগত কোনো কাজ প্রকাশ করা হয়। এর মানে হচ্ছে অতীতে ঐ কাজটির পুনরাবৃত্তি হতো, এবং অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই তা নির্দিষ্ট সময় অন্তর অন্ত্র,
- When I was a kid I would play with dolls every day.
➤ Would দিয়ে ভবিষ্যতে কোনো কাজ করার ইচ্ছাকেও প্রকাশ করা হয়। এক্ষেত্রে অধিকাংশ সময়ই শব্দটিকে “would like to…” এর মধ্যে ব্যবহার করা হয়।
- She would like to come to the party.
➤ প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যে Would দিয়ে কাউকে কোনো কাজ করতে বলা হয়। ফলে এটি can এর মতোই কাজ করে-কিন্তু would ব্যবহারের ফলে বাক্যটিতে বিনয় প্রকাশ পায়।
- Would you please close the door?
➤ শর্তমূলক বাক্যে অনেক সময় would ব্যবহৃত হয় যেখানে দেখানো হয় যে একটি বিষয় আরেকটি বিষয়ের উপর নির্ভর করে। আপনি হয়তো would… if সম্বলিত বাক্য দেখেছেন। নিচের উদাহরণগুলো খেয়াল করুন:
- She would go to the mall if you asked her.
- He would become fluent in English if he practiced more often.
➤ এছাড়াও, would শব্দটি সাধারণত wish এর সাথে যুক্ত হয়ে ইচ্ছা বা অভিপ্রায় প্রকাশ করে।
- I wish you would stop tapping your pencil.
Should
➤ আপনি অনেক সময় should শব্দটি শুনে থাকবেন যার মাধ্যমে কাউকে পরামর্শ দেয়া বা কারো কাছ থেকে পরামর্শ চাওয়া হয়।
- You should do your homework.
- The governor should visit our neighborhood.
➤ Should I meet you at your apartment?
➤ একইভাবে, প্রয়োজনীয় কিন্তু সম্ভবত প্রত্যাশিত নয় এমন কিছুকে বর্ণনা করতে এটি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- She should comb her hair but she doesn’t want to.
➤ Should দিয়ে কখনো কখনো প্রত্যাশা প্রকাশ করা হয়।
- He should be back by 10 pm
- The mall should be empty at this time of night
May
➤ May হচ্ছে can এর মতো আরেকটি modal verb কিন্তু may শব্দটি তুলনামূলক ফরমাল এবং মার্জিত। এটি ১ দিয়ে অনুমতি প্রকাশ করা হয় বা কোনো কিছু চাওয়া হয়। বরং অনুমতি চাইতে এটিই সবচেয়ে ভদ্র উপায়।
- May I sit beside you?
- You may pour yourself a cup of tea
➤ May দিয়ে প্রায়শই সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করা হয়।
- We may go downtown tonight.
Might
➤ May এর মতোই, might দিয়ে সম্ভাবনা প্রকাশ করা যাবে। এই প্রসঙ্গে may এবং might এর অর্থের মধ্যে
তেমন পার্থক্য না থাকলেও may কে তুলনামূলক ফরমাল মনে করা হয়।
- He might get the job at the factory.
➤ Might ব্যবহার করে কোনো কিছুর জন্য পরামর্শও দেয়া যাবে। “Might as well” ফ্রেজের মধ্যে বোঝানো হয় যে সে কাজটির জন্য আর কোনো কোনো বিকল্প নেই।
- I might as well go home since there’s no one else here.
Must
➤ Must দিয়ে সাধারণত “have to” কিংবা “need to” অর্থ প্রকাশ করা হয় যদিও must কে অন্য দুইটি বিকল্পের চেয়ে তুলনামূলক ফরমাল মনে করা হয়।
- You must finish your homework by Wednesday.
➤ Must দিয়ে দৃঢ় পরামর্শও দেয়া হয়।
- You must see the Louvre while you’re in Paris!
➤ Must দিয়ে অনুমান প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব যদি আপনি মনে করেন যে আপনার অনুমান সঠিক অথবা যদি এমন হয় যে আপনার অনুমানের স্বপক্ষে আপনি প্রমাণ দেখাতে পারবেন।
- He must be smart because he studied engineering.
Shall
➤ Shall একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ modal verb যা দৈনন্দিন জীবনে খুব কমই ব্যবহৃত হয় কারণ ন্যাটিভ স্পিকারদের কাছে শব্দটিকে একটু বেশীই ফরমাল ও মার্জিত মনে হয়। এর ব্যবহার will এর মতো। আপনি হয়তো আগেকার যুগে রচিত সাহিত্যে বেশী বেশী এর ব্যবহার লক্ষ্য করে থাকবেন।
- I shall call your mother if you misbehave.
- We shall arrive at 5:00.
