Pharmacological Management

  • Intravenous diazepam or lorazepam can be given for stopping seizures 
  • Acid base imbalance and isotonic imbalance can be treated by giving intravenous (IV) solution 
  • Coma from drug overdose may be reversed by giving proper antidotes, e.g. 
  • Opium overdose may be reversed by nalaxone.

The points of nursing case include:

  • Position of the patient Airway 0
  • Observation and charting
  • Hygiene
  • Care of pressure area and preventions of foot drop
  • Nutrition
  • Eliminations.

Position

  • The patient is nursed in the prone, lateral or Sim’s position.
  • Airway
  • An adequate airway must be manufactured at all times. 
  • It may be necessary to hold the patient’s jaw forward.
  • Observation and Charting
  • Note the level of consciousness, reaction to vocal stimulates, size of the pupil and Pupils equal, round, react to light accommodation (PERRLA)
  • Check temperature and pulse rate (TPR) and BP cautioudy 
  • The occurrence of muscle spasm is recorded.

Hygiene

  • A mosquito net should be provided.
  • Sponging is performed as frequently as possible .
  • Mouth wash are performed to prevent drying of mucous membrane .
  • Eye care should be necessary to keep the bid margin.

Care of Pressure and Prevention of Fool Drops

  • The patient should be nursed on a stipule mattress
  • Bed line must be kept taut and dry 
  • A bed cradle may be used to take the weight of the bed clothes
  • Patient’s position should be changed every hour 
  • The feet should be kept right angle to the leg 
  • Passive physiotherapy will help to keep the ankles and feet is good conditions.

Nutrition

  • The diet must be containing adequate supply of all the nutrients . 
  • It should be given as IV infusion or gastric tube feedings.

 

Pharmacological Management

 

Eliminations

  • The patient is observed for any signs of urinary retention and constipation.
  • If the patient is constipated, a glycerin suppository may be given.
  • Incontinence of urine may occur is which case a bedpan or divided matters may be used for female patient, for male patient usual may be used.
  • Apply gentle pressure on bladder if there is any urinary retention .
  • Maintain intake output chart.
