Types of Conflict
Conflict is classified into the following four types
A. Functional or Dysfunctional (constructive or destructive)
a. Functional
This conflict is issue oriented. It is generally of administrative of technical nature. It is of constructive form. It It supports the goals goals of the group. It improves performance.
b. Dysfunctional
Conflict is of personal nature, It is personality- oriented. It is based on animosities and deep rooted personal feelings and attitudes. It is of destructive form. It hinders group performance.
B. Task, process or relationship conflict
a. Task conflict
It relates to the content and goals of work, It can result from task interdependence, task ambiguity and differences in work orientation. A low to moderate level of task conflict is functional. It stimulates discussion of ideas and issues that help groups perform better
b. Process conflict:
It relates to how the work gets done.
AJow level of process conflict is functional. However, it can become dysfunctionak when it-
✓ creates uncertainty about task, roles
✓ Increases time taken to complete task
✓ Leads to members working at cross-purposes.
c. Relationship conflict:
It is a conflict based on interpersonal relationships. It inyolyes, frictions and interpersonal hostilities between two persons. Conflict can also be interpersonal which takes place within an individual. It can be inter-term, between team members interpersonal and between organizations. It is dysfunctional. It hinders completion of tasks due to:
✓ Increase personality clashes, and
✓ Decreased mutual understanding

Causes of Conflict:
Competing goals: Goals of team members that compete with each other, such that the pursuit of one goal detracts from the pursuit of the other
➤ Misunderstanding of job responsibilities: Lack of information ation or misunderstanding of roles and responsibilities
➤ Misunderstanding of of requirements: Lack of information or misunderstanding of business need.
➤ Interdependence: Dependency on team members for completion of work
➤ Feedback mechanism: Missing frequent and genuine feedback from peers / leaders
➤ Performance appraisal system: Appraisals that measure individual performance rather than teamwork.
➤ Conflict of interest between team members
➤ Disagreement about strategy: for achieving team goals
➤ Disagreement about execution: of strategy for achieving team goals
➤ Lack of focus: Isolated functions without mutual goals commitment
➤ Poor planning: Poor planning in terms of work division, task allocation etc.
➤ Blame Culture: Blame others in case of missed deadlines, missed goals
➤ Self-centered: Not acting as part of the team
➤ Seeking individual recognition
➤ Lack of knowledge of agile principles and values.
➤ Fear of failure: For example not acting for fear of failing, blaming others for one’s own failures, hiding errors and so on.
➤ Lack of team responsibility: self-centered attitude, not feeling a part of team success and failures
