Definition of stress
Stress is the response produced by a stressor (Or event causing the stress). If a family is handling stress poorly or using ineffective adaptive strategies, it may be in crisis. When a family crisis occurs, the stressors are overwhelming, and the family is unable to cope and resolve problems.

In a medical or biological context stress is a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. Stresses can be external (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal (illness, or from a medical procedure). Stress can initiate the “fight or flight” response, a complex reaction of neurologic and endocrinologic systems.
Definition of family stress
Family stress is defined as disturbance in the steady state of the family system. The disturbance can emerge from the outside context (e.g., war, unemployment), from inside the family (e.g.. death; divorce), or both simultaneously.
Contributing factors/ risk factors/causes of stress/family stress
Environmental factors, life changes and physiologic or emotional illness all contribute to stress.
Life changes that cause stress for most people include the following:
- Death of a spouse
- Divorce
- Marital separation from mate
- Detention in Jail or other institution.
- Death of a close family mender
- Major personal injury or illness
- Marriage
- Being fried at work
- Marital reconciliation with mate
- Retirement from work
- Trouble with in-laws Crisis:

Definition of crisis
A crisis is any event that is going (or is expected) to lead to an unstable and dangerous situation affecting an individual, group, community, or whole society.
Definition of family crisis
Family crisis is a stressful and disruptive event (or series of events) that comes with or without warning and disturbs the equilibrium of the family. Family crisis can also result when usual problem solving methods fail.
Types of Crises
1. Developmental Crises: Developmental crises are periods of disruption that occur at transition points during normal growth & development. Developmental crisis arise from both physical & social changes.
2. Situational Crisis: A situational crisis is a stressful disruption event arising from an external event that occurs suddenly often without working, to a person, group or community. The developmental crisis of midlife may be complicated by situational crisis such as divorce a job change.
Signs of crisis:
- Irrational and/or narrow thinking
- Lowered attention span
- Unclear motives
- Disorganized approach to problem solving
- Resistance to communication
- Inability to differ between large and small issues
- Change/alteration to social networks
