School Health is
- a healthful environment,
- nursing and other health services that students need to stay in school,
- nutritious and appealing school meals,
- opportunities for physical activity that include physical education,
- health education
- programs that promote the health of school faculty and staff, and
- Counseling, psychological and social services that promote healthy social and emotional development and remove barriers to students’ learning.

Schools can have a major effect on children’s health. Schools can teach children about health, and promote healthy behaviors. Physical education classes give children a chance to get exercise.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity among pupils, teachers and other school personnel.
School health service
The school health service is a personal health service delivering comprehensive health care services to the school students and school personnel’s throughout the school years.
Importance of school health service/ school health programme
1. To control communicable disease among the students.
2. It is the formative period, where what you educate them they will practice then in adulthood, iii. It is important place of learning.
3. To provide emergency care for illness or injury while at school.
4. To ensure that all students get appropriate referrals to health care providers.
5. To monitor for and control the spread of communicable disease.
6. To provide education and counseling in a variety of health and wellness topics.
7. To serve as a medical resource in the development of policies and procedures in the school
Functions of a school health nurse
1. health promotion & Ensuring community participation
2. Examination of school environment
3. Designing of health education curriculum
4. Providing counseling
5. Helping students, their parents and teachers to develop positive attitude and health behaviour
6. Health education to children, their parents and teachers
7. Helping school authorities and teachers to plan mid-day meal which is cheap, nutritious, hygienical and supplemental.

Objective of school health services
General objective:
1. To provide comprehensive health care to promote the positive health of the children.
Specific objectives:
1. To provide healthful school environment.
2. To provide knowledge, attitude and practice regarding the good health habit and personal hygiene.
3. The prevention of communicable diseases.
4. Early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of defects.
5. Awakening health consciousness in children.
School health problems
A. Problems related to the health of the students:
1. Malnutrition – Undernutrition or over nutrition
2. Eye problems – Defective vision, conjunctivitis.
3. Dental problems – Carries teeth
4. Ear problems – Otitis media
5. Nose and throat problems – Tonsillitis, sore throat.
6. Skin disease – Scabies, Ring worm infection
7. Communicable disease – Diarrhoea diseases, chicken pox,
8. Helminthic disease – Ascariasis, enterbiasis, Trichuriasis.
B. Environmental health problems:
1. Lack provision of pure drinking water
2. Sanitation inadequate lavatory facilities.

1. Screening of school children.

Criteria of healthful school environment:
- Good sanitary facilities
- Pure water supply
- Good ventilation and lighting
- Glare proof black boards, ceiling, and walls.
- Suitable chairs and desks.
- Restroom and play ground, Clean environment
3. Location: Away from busy areas.
4. Class room:
- Height 12 feet.
- Floor-smooth.
- Room-sound proof and dust proof
- Area-480 qr. Feet.
- Each child-Floor space -15 sq. feet.
- Each child- Air space 800 cu feet.
- The distance of black board should not be greater than 45 feet or less than 7 feet.
- Cross ventilation 25% of floor space.
5. Play ground:
- Primary school – half to 1 acre
- Secondary school – 5 to 14 acre
- For 500 pupils at least 7 acre.
