Weight Gain In Pregnancy – This course is designed to understand the care of pregnant women and newborn: antenatal, intra-natal and postnatal; breast feeding, family planning, newborn care and ethical issues, The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and develop competencies regarding midwifery, complicated labour and newborn care including family planning.

Weight pain during pregnancy:
The weight gain is progressive until last one or two weeks. The total weight gain during the course of a singleton pregnancy for a healthy woman averages 11kg.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations for gestational weight gain are based on body mass index (BMI) of women prior to pregnancy. However, early first trimester BMI appears to be a valid proxy for pre-conception BMI.
Rate of normal weight gain during pregnancy:
➤ 1 trimester: 1 kg. 2nd trimester: 5 kg.
➤ 3 trimester: 5 kg.

Components of weight gain:
Maternal weight gain (6 kg):
➤ Blood volume: 1.3 kg
➤ECF: 1.2 kg
➤ Fat & protein: 3.5 kg
Reproductive weight gain (6 kg):
➤ Fetus: 3.3 kg
➤ Placenta: 0,6 kg
➤Liquor:: 0.8 kg
➤ Uterus: 0.9 kg
➤ Breasts: 0.4 kg

Periodic weight checking during pregnancy:
Periodic & regular weight checking is important to detect abnormality –
➤ Rapid weight gain: A rapid weight gain of > 0.5 kg (11b) in a week or> 2.2 kg (5lb) in a month in later pregnancy may be early manifestation of pre-eclampsia & need careful supervision.
➤ Falling weight: Stationary or falling weight may suggest IUGR or IUD
